No on the 6cyl. The 4cyl is the same but the e30 4cyl bellhousing is bulkier.

(318's 84 -87(?) used the same basic M10 block as '02's, so those transmissions would bolt up.

All E30 6 cylinder cars used the M20 engine, which has a completely different bellhousing bolt pattern; if I remember correctly, the M42 4 cylinder used in the late (91-92) E30 318's has the same bellhousing pattern as the M20.

If you're looking for a trans for an M20 swap into a '02, the E30 transmissions have two major issues - physical size, and no mechanical speedo drive.

As you may have already found if you've been searching the archives, the most practical transmissions to use are those found in E21 320/6 & 323 models - M20 engine, same basic Getrag gearbox as an '02, but with the M20 bellhousing pattern. Only problem is that 5 speeds are getting really hard to find.

Bell housing bolt pattern of the M10 (2002) is same as all M30 6 cyl and also the E30 M3. All M20's (baby 6) and later twin cam motors are different than the M10. The M30 5speeds are great for high hp cars but you must modify the tunnel a lot to make them fit. Same is true for the E30 M3.
