i'am just starting a m2 project with a s14 motor .anyway the fuel guage is bad in the 2002 so i found one on ebay for a 74 to 76 02 ( he claims) i have a 1976 02 when i went to put it in it was an inch to long .does anybody know if a tii or early model 02 uses a longer sending unit ? thanks for the help .BTW good forum i also have a 427 cobra kit car ,triumph tr6 and 528i daily driver

i believe the tii in the later years had a larger tank (deeper) 51 ltr vs 46 i think. its possible you have a later unit. assuming this is what youre talking about. you said gauge but i think i know what you mean.

yes i ment the fuel sending unit in the tank one is 7 3/4" and one is 8 3/4" the one i need is 7 3/4" long

definately are two different "standard" tanks (not counting the much larger turbo unit) - I found a very clean tank (still had the paper BMW part number sticker on it) loose in the trunk of an '02 at a local yard (Antelope Foreign) just before they closed - when I compared it to the bad tank that had been removed from the '70 project car, it was noticeably deeper.

Sounds like maybe the sender you have is for the deeper tank - I put the original sender in the tank on the '70 - works ok, but it'll show "E" well before it runs out of gas. If you can't find the correct sender, let me know - I'll ask the friend who bought the '70 if he's interested in swapping senders.......
