I've been diggin thru searches, but thinkin I just a quick answer.

See the three relays by my battery (its a 74):

I think all of them are Hellas, and slightly different. Hella part numbers are faded and unintelligible. rallylights.com doesn't show any round relays.

The previous owner put H4 conversions in it, with 55/60W bulbs.

I just wanted to get some shiny new relays to replace them, everything seems to work OK. So I pulled all of them out, and took them into Hawaii Import Parts, which usually has any random old import parts I need. They couldn't find anything that resembles them. I tried BMW of Honolulu, and no go either, nothing like that in computer.

From searching it appears that other squaretail cars have square relays here. I've also seen in the FAQ that upgraded relay systems are good for H4s. But maybe not necessary for 74-76 cars?

Anyways, are these relays stock or an upgrade by PO? or do I need an upgrade?

Where can I find new relays like these?

Thanks all.

Try Carl at La Jolla Independent ( 800-466-8184 ) or maybe Susquehanna Motorsports ( Pennsylvania ) as they carry a full line of Hella lighting/relays, or maybe even a VW shop (?).

I' ve seen square relays to replace them - might have to contact the "usual sources" to see if round are still available.

and all can easily be polished with a little aluminum polish and either elbow grease or a Dremel tool with a polishing buff on it.

The ORIGINAL style round aluminum relays are NLA. They have been supeceded by square plastic relays if you check at the dealer. Internally they are the same. You could polish them but then they are shiny instead of the anodized/brushed finish. I have many of these original round aluminum relays in excellent condition without the oxidation to the housing that most have.

Is it the same as the square metal relay I have on my firewall behind washer bottle? Thats a bew Bosch, and the main kind of relay Hawaii Import Parts sold for 2002s, which is what they suggested but didn't know. HIP does specialize in BMW, VW, Porsche...and they usually have most anything. And as I said earlier, dealership couldn't find anything on their computer.

I may just go with the square metal bosch ones all thru. I could polish mine easy (see valve cover), but i'd rather go with new for fresh internals.

You can clean up the round ones for "show" and use the new ones to "go" - nice to have working lights & horn!

OK, I was in the neighborhood of some parts cars today (both squaretail). Under hood of one, all three were old crusty Hella round style. Under hood of other were square Bosch ones with numbers printed on them. I grabbed one, and took it to one normal parts store. He could only find me a plastic one of a different brand that matched up, for like $11, even at wholesale cost (friends are great).

But I had to run by Hawaii Import Parts to pick up my shift tower mounts, and showed them the Bosch square relay. They found me shiny metal Bosch square ones exactly the same, for like $10/each retail price. I changed them all, and it works fine. When I'm bored I may shine up the round ones, and keep them if I want it to look slightly more fancy.

Oh, and if I'm reading the right number, the Bosch part number is 0 332 014 406. All headlights and horn seem to work fine.
