My 72 tii runs very well.Just recently on cold start she pops over quickly but for the first 30 sec. or so when I give a bit of gas she revs slowly. After 30+ sec she'll rev fine.Is this a cause for concern? any solutions would be great....

Thanks

Z, thanks I have that and also bought a repo. of the 2002 tii manual butn the sluggish rev. from cold for 30sec. or so is not listed...wondering if it cause for worry or is it just a mild little irritation.

hmm

well your cold start injector is shooting gas -- that should only affect the first few seconds while you crank.

and you say the car does start.

Could it be that your warm up regulator is out of wack? Like maybe its not returning to the 'cold' position, so you are starting a cold engine with less air/fuel than normal cold starting specs? then after the car warms up a little bit its fine?

thats possible.I had my cold start leaned out a bit by a local shop. The tech has been working on 02 since the 70's.Sound like it need to be fattened up a bit.I'm an automotive hypochondriac....I always think the worst

in the first 30 seconds, the oil has not had a chance to warm or even start to circulate.

The cold start valve will shoot enough fuel to start the car and the warm up regulator will be engaged and sending additional fuel and unmetered air for 3-5 minutes. Not sure what would affect the first 30 seconds of the cycle other than the car is cold and it just got through injesting an additional squirt of fuel.

so does this behaviour change if the car is warm?

Like you drive it up to full operating temp, stop the car, get some gas or something and then try to start again?

Or only when its dead cold.. like sitting over night?

Only from dead cold....drive sit for an hour or two..car warms as normal.I always let my cars warm up for a minute or two from dead cold before driving and then rev lightly for a couple of more minutes.

That's EXACTLY how I start every BMW I've ever owned - even the Motronic ones - On my Weber'd 02 - I hold it at about 1800 rpm for several minutes until I see the oil pressure drop a wee bit (don't want to push cold, thick oil too quickly through the filter on an icy cold morning...or POP!) I figure it helps use up all the fuel that gets squirted in by my 4 times gas pedal tromp choke mechanism. *wink*...not that I drive her in winter naturally, but I do start her up every week. ....four 45mm bottles of Italian viagara.

for the record...I like Al. I haven't installed the carpet I got from him yet - but I know I'll be happy until I can afford the wool type - which WILL come from him.
