Have you cleaned the screen on the fuel pickup in the tank and the screen in the pump inlet? The pumps will sound like that if they're struggling to suck fuel and will recover if you don't run them too long that way.

do i need to take off the pump to do that? if so wont it get air in the system. and how long would you say is too long for it to be like that?

In theory you could get the screen out of the inlet without removing the pump. In practice I suspect it would be a lot easier to do with the pump sititng on a bench. Don't worry about introducing air into the system because the pump will prime itself.

Either way, work carefully because you WILL spill gas all over the place when you're disconnecting hoses and pulling the pick-up out of the tank.

I have no idea how long it takes to kill a pump running like that. If it has been a while I'd say the safe bet is to replace it now or at least order a spare. But it is certainly worth the excersise to check the filters in the tank and in the inlet, clean them and if they are clogged figure out why. You may need to just drain your gas tank or it may need repair/replacement if it is disintegrating inside.
