I may have a lead on an S14 here in the land of OZ. The owner of it is having an e46 M3 & 6spd SMG combo put in one of his e30 M3's, and may have an engine surplus to requirements.

And as my engine is, according to my mechanic "shagged", I've been pondering the idea of the S14.

My questions are this:

1.Can I use my getrag 245 5 speed with the S14? If so, will the linkages be the right length or do these need modification as well?

2. How much of the s14's wiring harness needs to be put into the 02? Can I use an aftermarket computer to run the motor?

3. how much of the e30's instrumentation do I need? Temp, etc.

Thats the stuff thats keeping me up at night. I know about the sump and the exhaust/steering issues, just the aforementioned is a mystery.

Time to list what parts I have to sell!

Skippy.

I believe the tranny is a 265 box. It's the same box used on other BMWs, just the front bell housing part is unique to the S14.

For the harness, you will want all the sensors that are on the motor itself. Get as much of the harness as possible. I can check the ETM to see what inputs are ~needed~ for the S14 brain, but you will need the flywheel sensors, the temp sensors on the coolant rail, and the wires to the AFM. Don't sweat the barometric pressure sensor. Most M3 owners leave theirs disconnected.

For instrumentation, the speedo will now be electronic with the pick up coming off of the diff most likely. Aftermarket instruments will hook right up, but I am sure others here that have done the S14 conversion have other, more factory looking solutions.

These are not the things that have been keeping you up at night. A more likely cause of the insomnia is your next door neighbor playing his Rolf Harris CD's at all hours. ;^)

Hahahaha, I know what you are up to.... soooo totally envious! I wanted that motor BAD! Good luck with the project, you can break the ground, I will ride your wave of success...

As far as I know, m2bmw.com - Nick's car is RHD... he should be able to help with a bit of the info.

That is the motor I am thinking of... 2.3 with a box and Dinan chip... I read about it on eurocca.net - one of the members there is selling it on behalf of the owner I think.

You can use the gearbox but the flywheel sensor etc. are mounted in casting on the bell housing of the 265 but you could modify and fit them anywhere, fitting a 265 would solve that problem but cause another one because of it's larger size.

You can remove the engine loom with all wiring and ECU and fit to your 2002, it only needs minor electrical wiring.

Your biggest headache is the exhaust fouling the R/H steering box, if you want to run a good flowing header, but at the loss of a feww bhp get a good header fabricator to make one up.

There are quite a few after market fuel and ignition systems about for the S14, the Alpha N is quite popular.

If you really want to confuse yourself fit a KF pump to it, that will keep you off the streets for a while.
