i want to get a 292 cam but im not sure if the kugelfischer can supply enough gas for it. would the efi system provide a sufficent amount of fuel?

You can search the archieves and see a significant debate between those who (wrongly) say tii's can't handle anything but a stock cam, and those who have successfully run a tii with a 292. I'm in the latter group. It takes a fair amount of expertize to tune it correctly (I couldn't, my mechanic could), but it runs like a beast when dialed in. FYI. that same mechanic runs a 334 degree cam in his stock tii fuel injection (tweaked, but stock compenents).

hey schnell540

Are the hotter cam tii's that work 1973 or earlier? Just wondering about the 74tii since its got a slightly different kugelfisher air/fuel cone (as I understand it).

In yet another future project i'd like to build a hot cam tii engine and i've got extra pumps -- a 74 and a 72 .. just wondering if there is any significant difference between the two when screwing around with the cam etc

cheers

Mine was a 72 and my mechanics is a 74. So, the slight difference in the k-fish pump is not really signiicant in this regard. Because the 3-D cam in the pump is calibrated for a stock cam, the fuel curve is not perfect on a modified motor. But, it more than works. The differences in the 3-D cams between the 72/3 and 74 doesn't come into play here. From my understanding, the pumps are pretty close to interchangeable, anyway.

FWIW, almost every Alpina A4 injection set up I know of is running a stock k-fish that has merely been tweaked. If the pump can work with that change, a hot cam is nothing too mysterious.

a stock tii is a wonderful compromise throughout the rpm range, if you go 292 the stock pump will supply enough fuel, but you will sacrificing something at a lower rpm's, but there are those, myself included, that never stay there for too long anyway, so it is a mute point.

you can probably play with the linkage geometry/ mechanics to effect different air/fuel ratio. My understanding that BMW itself did that with their 02 turbos, there was a solenoid that push the pump lever when the turbo kicked in (at least that's what I heard from a turbo guru).

This might oversimplify it, but there several ways to make the pump "think" it has to be somewhere, for any given rpm/throtle pos. etc. It just takes a little imagination, ingenuity, patience, and one whole lot of spare time. Of course, of course, it will never be as perfect as stock, but my educated guess tells me it is possible for a narrower rpm range.

Dutch,

I had a very nice malaga 1973 2002tii 12 years ago, maintained by local BMWCCA folks. The engine was rebuilt when I bought the car and it had the 292 cam. I don't have the paperwork on that car anymore but you can send Roy Hopkins an e-mail if you want and ask him about that tii. He rebuilt the motor with the folks at Eksten Autoworks, a local shop that does a lot of BMW and Porsche work. Roy is at: roy@imrtest.com and if you want, try Larry Eksten or Rick Hoyt at Eksten Autoworks, they'll remember this car very well. They are both at 585-621-8200. That tii was a very nice car, drove extremely well.

I can vouch for Wes Ingram's work.

I have a '72 tii with an Isky 292. Getting it dynoed this summer revealed it leaned about above 4k b/c of the increased breathting of the cam. In order to compensate, either you have to have the cam profile of the KF re-worked, or you can install a secondary throttle linkage like the one from Wes. Straight forward assy an well worth it. i'll re-dyno this summer and post results.

I chose the later and am ver happy with it. Wes is a great guy and I can recommend his work (no affliation).

But again, and i've said this before, hindsight is everything and I probably would not go for a hotter cam again. Like many have said, a well-tuned tii is great fun as it is.

Just my opinion, HTH.
