not sure what you mean by 'above the steering wheel, but the number looks right for US spec car built between Jan & Dec 1970. total cars built that year with us specs 8379. if you email mobile tradition they can give you more specific details like the day your car rolled of the production line. no charge for this info in an email I (think), but a fee for same plus extra info in certificate form.

The US spec cars had a little vin plate on the black vinyl trim on top of the steering column. Not sure why this is, but all US spec cars are required to have a vin that is viewable through the windshield some place. So this vin plate is in addition to the vin plate that is under the hood on the passenger side on US cars.....driver side on aussie cars...

ago, your car may be an early 1971. Factory "year" cutoffs were based on calendar years: 1 January to 31 December, while our "model years" ran from 1 Sep to 31 Aug, so I had to do some extrapolating, based on average monthly production. My extrapolated VINs for model year 1970 production were 1668756-1676471. "First series" 1971s (built from 1 Sept 70 to sometime in April 1971) were 1676472-1680000. Then the "modell 71" cars began with 2570001 and ran up to approx 257-6499 in Aug 71, when model year 72 producction began.

If you contact Mobile Tradition and get an actual build date on your car, please advise me so I can continue to update my VIN data for everyone's benefit.

cheers
