the rear main seal was leaking after like 50 miles - but now its not. is this normal? will it come back with a vengance??

heh yes. thats funny though. when i first got my 02 i didnt know they burned oil. what a surprise!!

The rear main seal on these engines is a rubber lip seal with a spring behind it... like a wheel bearing or tranny output seal. I don't see how it could fix itself unless something was stuck in it and causing it to seal improperly.

Maybe someone put in some sort of seal conditioner that expanded the seal slightly.

Was it overfilled when it was leaking? The excessive pressure might have caused it to leak.

Did you change oil viscosity?

Pat, did you put in a new seal when you did the clutch?

the entire engine got new seals. thats why its frustrating that its leaking
