The speedo cable has broken. I was working on the instrument cluster, the cable fell down apparently and the speedo didn't work after driving it. I looked around and then looked under the car and saw that the very short drive had removed the outer sheild and the inner shielding was unravelled. How hard is it to replace this part. Any instructions would be great. That and a part number for a cable for a 1974 2002, I have a 4 speed transmission as well.

Thanks

I just replaced mine two weeks ago. Not much to tell you, it's not very hard. I've got a '70 4 speed, I'm sure it's similar. Remove the small bolt on the trans, the cable will then pull right out. Mine was broken right at the trans, so I had to get tweezers to pull out the piece that was broken. Other than that, it's pretty straight forward. You've got to intall it from inside the car out, because of the rubber grommet that seals the hole at the firewall. I made that mistake! After hooking up the trans end, I found I couldn't get it through the firewall. Pretty stupid. If I would have given it five seconds of thought, I would have noticed that before I started.

I've heard that some cars have a two piece cable, but I'm not sure what year that started.

"thermal reactor service" warning light control interposed between the two cables. Your 74 shouldn't have that.

If you want one, I have a spare sitting here. I bought one on ebay while thinking mine was toast, and it turns out it was the speedo itself that was bad. I still put the ebay one in my car, and have mine sitting here, which spins just fine. It's from a 74 4-speed as well. The firewall grommet is kind of chewed up since I busted it up while removing it.

Just e-mail me your address to kfunk at hawaii dot edu, and I can drop it in the mail.

3 days and it'll be there. Just fill it full of an appropriate oil or cable lube and it'll last a while. It's a pain getting the grommet in and out, as you'll see on mine. Anybody got any tricks for popping that grommet in and out in one piece?
