The more I learn about these cars the more I realize how much I don't know . . . I want to replace the front and rear main seals on the 245 Getrag tranny I have, which came from a '80 320i. The 245 is the same as the 242 except for the added middle section, right? So why are different front main seals listed for a '80 320i and a '76 2002? Rear seals are listed as same for those two years, BUT for a '70 2002 and a '76 2002 the front seals are the same and the rear seals are listed as being different. Anyone have a good understanding of which seals were used on which transmissions and when? Does this have to do with changes in output shafts and input shafts? I guess I could remove the seals on my 5 spd. and then order by correct size. ????

The older I get the better I was!

Basicly you already stated how to get the right seals. The year is the key to ordering the right parts, this is further checked by the trans number. Thats how the softwear works model, year, trans. The numbers are different as the rear input is different, also slight updates to the design are done. One seal may be .5mm bigger or smaller or redesigned to seal better. Us or motorsport connections can get you the right seals based off that info.
