While in the process of preparing my 1602 for a roadworthy cert. I was driving to the tire place for new tires and noticed the tacho was off the scale and not moving at all. It was working when i first started it up that morning, but now its stuck off the scale. I have'nt touched the cluster or wires to the coil. Is it dead? or just a loose wire?? Please help it's hard to fix the timeing on a car with no tacho. TIA Beaner7102.

when you turn off the ignition does it go back to 0?

I'm not sure but I would venture to guess that the tach runs off of pulses from the coil, points, whatever. If you're reading off the scale you're probably just running constant power to the tach. That can come from any number of places along the wire. Check and find the short and it should be fine, if not look for new tacho....

It stays off the scale with the ignition off.

What do you mean by "off the scale", anyway? Below 0 rpm or over 8000 rpm? Any sense that the needle is trying to move at all?

If the needle somehow jumped the zero stop pin, you could remove the tach from the cluster and very carefully help the needle tip back over.

Off the scale at the 8000rpm end. I'll have to pull it out and try to see what is wrong. thanks guys. Beaner7102
