The other post got me thinking of what i would import if I had the oppurtunity. I'd love to have a e30 M3 EVO or Alpina e30 M3? How old does the car have to be before all the restrictions are lifted. An 02 Turbo too, of course. Any other cars worth getting that we don't have here in the states?

Any of the Alpina cars are pretty rare. As someone who drives one, I would also buy critical spares (AFM, guages, dashes, ecu's, etc). Those parts are virtually impossible to find in the US and Alpina does not support the older cars. I would also stay away from the earlier Alpina turbo versions (B7's for example). The E30 Evo's are very rare here but have to be federalized. I think the process exempts cars more than 25 yrs old, but you should check with someone who knows for sure. The other cars that never got imported here (E28 M5 tourings for example) would spark a lot of interest. BTW, the factory 02 turbos seem to be struggling for value. The other stuff to think about is rust. My Alpina B9 and the 323i Baur top I imported in the 80's were never really driven on Euro salt covered rds. I have seen cars that were driven for a few yrs in Europe and then imported that had very serious rust issues. Good luck

More former BMW's than it is possible to list.

How about those dual carbed late 60's-early 70s GTVs? I think they were restricted to using SPICA so the only duel carbed alfas are found in Canada, or aftermarket

+ GTVs are pretty sweet cars

What about smog in Cali? and registation? I have a Bimmer mag with the b6 M3 in front of me right now and I'm salivating just thinking about it.

standards are waived on 25 year old and older vehicles, but state emissions requirements still apply. On that basis, you could bring in an '80 Alpina E21 with very little problem from the feds, but getting it smogged in CA would probably be a nightmare.
