The symptoms of the chirp are:

upon light acceleration and just a constant speed I get a chirpping noise.

Temp guage is reading normal, not running hot

If car is not in gear or in gear and stopped and I rev the engine I don't get the noise. It is only when I'm moving.

Sounds like it is coming from the engine bay/front of the car

1. dry/failing bearing in water pump or alternator

2. Fan belt too tight or loose, or something (like a leaking water pump or hose) is lubricating it and causing it to slip

3. Radiator cap is defective and is venting periodically

4. Alternator mounting bushings are worn so the alternator isn't sitting straight in relation to belt, causing it to chatter/squeal

5. Dry cam lobes in dizzy

6. If you're running the heater, dry bearings in the heater motor

7. Squirrels/mice even a cat stuck in engine compartment (don't laugh, it's happened)

That should get you started. Post whatcha find...

My water pump just went bad over the weekend. Initially started as a slight chirp only when the engine was under load and quickly became a LOUD squeal/howl (along with higher temperature readings) in 20-30 city miles.

When you say engine under load does that mean in motion or just it idling and reving it while stopped. I can rev the engine while stopped and no noise, the chirping is only when the car is in motion and accelerating or under normal driving condition. When I engage the clutch to slow down no more chirping.

Same thing with my car - when accelerating in first or second gear it would squeal.

In my case, the engine began to run hotter and I could see some coolant on the pump casing. From what I've read, as the pump goes bad, its designed to "leak" coolant as a visual aid to confirm bearing failure.

Once I put my carb back on with a cracked gasket and it whistled when I reved it. Check the connection between the carb and the mainifold to see if it is loose or the gasket is cracked. This might be the problem, good luck.
