it all started when i fitted a bosch blue coil from a junkyard, it looked new thats why i bought it ($2). after about 15 miles of driving the engine started to get a little clumsy below 2000 rpms as if one of the cylinders wasn't firing or something. then i was at a stop sign and my engine stopped and diesled for no real reason. after that my tack just stopped working, later when i was on the highway going home my engine backfired so i stopped and it wouldn't start for awhile, it finally did and i limped home, i put the original coil back on and its not as clumsy but the tackometer still doesn't work. i checked all the fuses and they are all intacked,

whats going on with my car?!?!?!?!

Coil wires not right, tach coil prolly not attached. Just happemed to me recently. I found the wire hanging. I attached it to the negative side of the coil, and long behold, tach works...

...second, double-check that you do have the tach wire connected to the coil. It should be a black one. That's the most likely culprit.

both the wires are on the coil, properly i think.i put them on how they were before

I'd stop worrying about my tach, and figure out what the hell went wrong with your car. Sounds kind of spooky to me, wish I could say I knew what happened... but something went haywire. Is it running 100% now with the old coil? or is it still clumsy? If so, make doubly sure it won't happen again, then worry about your tach when your running 100% again.

The tach itself isn't wired in a complex fashion, so check all your leads, and if all else fails, scoop the tach out of the car you got the coil from.

...since that's the last thing you messed with before the problem started. Check that the wires are properly connected at the coil, ballast resistor and distributor. Check the connections for the spark plug wires at both ends. Inspect the cap carefully to be sure you don't have a crack, carbon trail or oxidation on the contacts. Verify that your point gap is correct, and maybe replace and re-gap the points and condenser. Then start inspecting your wires really carefully--one may have a problem.

If I had to guess, I'd say it has something to do with your points--maybe they got burned by sitting closed with the ignition on too long--or your cap. Your symptoms would seem to point to a problem with timing, and unless the distributor were turned (doesn't sound like that's the case), those two components would be the first suspects.

Fuses are a good place to check with chassis electrical problems on '02s, but not so much for engine electrical problems--very little of that system is actually on a fuse.

i put the old coil back in and it runs better but has a hard time getting started. but other than that it runs as good as it did before, it could be better
