Hi people,

I have 6x13 ATS five spoke wheels on my 02. They are et13 and have 205/60 Sumitomos mounted. In front, the left scrubs a bit at full lock. In the rear, the right side tire hits the fender over big bumps and with weight on that side of the car. All fenders are rolled except the right rear, which was replaced.

So, first thing is to roll the right fender to fix my current rubbing issue. I would like, though, to lower the car at some point, and I also like the look of the ATS. Here is what I am thinking.

1. Switch from 205/60 to 185/60 tires. The 205s are really big, and the smaller radius won't bother me as I'm mostly driving around town.

2. Machine a few mm off the back of the wheels to increase offset.

Or, just find a set of wheels that I like, eventually, that are a better fit.

For those of you who have machined the wheels, how much did you take off, and how much does it cost? I am about an hour outside Atlanta, so I could either find someone less expensive to do it outside the city, or drive in to Atl if necessary to find a competent machine shop. Anything else to think about when considering this operation?

Thanks!

Andrew

First change the tires and see if that cures the problem. If it was me (I'm a professional machinist) I would trim the rotors and not the wheels. At least if you do it wrong you can replace the rotors. I would say you can trim off 5-6mm. Finding a shop to do it will probably be a problem because they'll be afraid of the liability.

Another way would be to find the correct offset. ATS made the 6x13 wheel in a 27 MM offset which should fit most 2002's perfectly. I have a set of these in my garage. Drop me an e-mail if you are interested in a trade/swap.

After looking at a rotor last night I retract my previous statment. They are only 6 or 7 mm thick. I guess I was picturing another make of rotor, some are much thicker.
