looking to move over to a distributorless ignition system

Who's running them? What do you have to say about it? How'd you do it? Any suggestions on how to go about doing mine?

Do I need a special crank pulley, is there a kit available that is tried & true as well as reasonably priced, is it as simple as making another Pertronix type trigger, mounting it to the crank pulley & running it through an ignition box?

I want to do this for two reasons, first to learn about electronic ignitions/electronic management systems because megasquirt may be down the line, and second because I hope that it would offer better performance than a distributor if it's matched with the right coil, box, plugs, wires, etc....

Even if you have the wrong coil, the wrong wires etc. it will still out perform your distributor. You will need a special pulley with the trigger wheel on it. As far as I know they aren't commercially produced for M-10s. Check out www.millersmule.com The owner is a personal friend of mine and he will make anything you want. You'll also need a bracket to hold the crank sensor.

Thank you very much for the link. I will contact him with regards to a crank pulley as well as an adjustable cam gear.

I understand the crank trigger part however I don't exactly understand what's needed to get the spark from the coil to the plug. The crank trigger is the same as Pertronix no? Just something that says "NOW" 4X a revolution correct? So I'll need somthing that the trigger can go to to distribute the spark without a distributor. That's where I start to fall short on the knowing and understanding.

It's not as simple as the pertronix route. There needs to be some electronics required to take that 4x crank signal (or whatever it is) and compute crank angle and figure out when to fire the plugs.

With pertronix, you are relying on the mechanical/vacuum advance/retard of the distributer to give you that timing curve.

The most common ways of doing this are the following. There is the electromotive HPX type systems, where you mount a wheel to the crank, attach a crank pickup and then set some pots to do the advance curve. This is easiest (perhaps) but limits your range of timing curves.

The other ways are parts of total EFI packages. So for example the Megasquirt II type boxes or commercial stuff like motec, efi, pectel, dta, SDS, etc. This is the same mechanical difficulty of the electromotive route but more expense and better timing curve benefits.

If you are really thinking of megasquirt. I'd do the following. Build and install the megasquirt I or II for fuel only. Get it all working so you understand the system and troubleshoot all of it. Just use your current dizzy and ignition for now.

Then upgrade the MS I or MSII for spark using the diagrams on the megasquirt II faq page. I'm personally going to use GM DIS cause it juts means slotting the crank pulley flange in certain places rather than attaching a trigger wheel, but more people use the ford DIS. To each your own. Both are equally adequate for a m10 methinks.

I believe the megasquirt is a great boon for people that understand electronics and engine management. It's fairly limited but for a simple M10 without turbos, wastegate controls, no lift shifting, and nitrous an excellent choice. It is also affordable unlike a lot of other systems.

I could run my spare EFI box, but then it's more cost in harnessing (mil spec connectors) and way more complicated. The MS allows ease of use, minor tinkering and a large support network.

Goodluck in your pursuit.
