I know the Weber topic gets kicked around quite a bit...I'm considering upgrading to the 38/38 on a stock '76. Do I need to go to a different fuel pump? What else should I be considering to make this a pleasant and rewarding (mph) experience? Thanks

I tend to go faster, when I can.

the intake manifold has to be opened up (instead of two holes a race track shape opening). The car pictured on my avatar (not mine) had a 38/38, 3.90 limited slip diff, I used to call it a neck breaker, you could actually let the clutch out without pushing the gas pedal, also up to 80 mph was a blast. I would think that a 5 spd od tranny would just complete the package (to get you to 100). Cheap fun, hard to beat the thrill/cost ratio on that mod.

I have an electric choke 38DGAS on my '73.

My car has 9.5:1 pistons in an otherwise stock rebuild. I've heard that the 38 (in a totally stock motor) can give it a bit too much gas FWIW.

I also have a mechanical advance distributor and Pertronix (coil and ignitor) installed.

A+ in my book with my set-up.

I had a water choke in my 32/36 previous to the 38. Neither choke was really all that good. The electric one seems to be a bit more consistent in how it starts. To be honest - The Pertronix make a huge difference in how the engine started. The choke - not so much.

Good luck with your choice-

As info. - I have a pretty much stock '76 engine (for now) and I switched from a 32/36 manual choke Weber to a 38/38 manual choke Weber a couple of years ago. I took the intake manifold off of the car and hogged out the fuel/air intake ports, making one large oval to match up with the two 38mm barrels on the carb. Once all was re-installed I adjusted the carb. & adjusted the accelerator linkage and have been having more fun ever since. Definitely more power :) but not so good gas milage :( as I can't keep my foot out of it :).

The older I get the better I was!

Yes - Gas mileage can suffer.

Around town - Low 20's.

Cruising on the highway - I actually get about 28 if I'm keeping it to ~70mph. If it's on the twisties or you are into the throttle off and on a bunch - back to the low 20's.

All in all - That and the Pertronix were the best things I've done to the car.
