Where can I find out info about track cert standards? Most importantly about roll cages and the materials required for safety cages. Can they be made out of composite materials or MUST they be steel/CroMoly?

Can composite materials be used for cages or is it pretty standard that it MUST be steel? I'm looking into lighter weight alternatives to steel but I have a feeling that it wouldn't be allowed because it would provide adequate stiffening but possibly not enough impact resistance. I just don't know enough about it but I have a shell that I want to build into a track car

It is imperitive that you determine where you want to run the car and in what class you will be in. Saying that you want a track car is a very broad statement. Once you have figured out what class you are in, you need the rules. Build a car to the rules, it's easier than getting the rules changed to suit your car. Even if you just want to go time trial racing with a small club, build a car with SCCA specs in mind. It will not only allow you to move up the ranks easier, it will also add resale value to the car. The car I bought was prepped to the limits of prepared autocrossing. Many of the expensive parts will need to be discarded in order to go road racing. The engine and body are built to GT specs, but the cage and safety gear are not. Unless I want to spend a crap load of money to build a GT3 car, I will either have to race vintage or stick to crushing cones in a parking lot. Neither particularly apeal to me. I crave the contact that goes along with IT racing. Think twice build once. Find a track and volunteer for a while. It will give you a true idea of which direction you want to go in.
