I think it was a first(at least what I have seen). There were more 2002's than there were E30M3's at the Car Control Clinic today. Lots of shiny, new metal including an E90 and a new 5 that refused to let the driver control the car on the skidpad. He would start to get it loose, then the car decided it wanted to turn in more. This was not your normal DSC/ASC.

Matt B showed up with his carbon fibre blessed 02 and showed the new car crowd what these old cars are made of. Half the horsepower? No ABS? No problem. Unfortunately with the instructor rotation, I was only able to get his car for a couple of runs on the skidpad and not for the slalom. Tech inspection took three times as long on his old car. Well, actually, it only took 3 minutes. The other 15 minutes was us oogling his car. E46M3...hohum...give me a ~real~car.

How was it in the rain, Matt? A few people commented that your car looked pretty good and sorted out on the course.

Heard rumours of being fitted with a M20 engine...

I have posted a page in the shop to let know parents about these wonderful control clinics, and encourage them to send their teenage drivers...uhmm, maybe that will hurt my business... LOL!

I have never had so much fun driving a car. i was slipping and sliding, spinning out, killing cones all over that place but at the end of each session i managed to get the hang of it. I felt way out of place with by far the oldest BMW there but a few people including Steve J. came over and had some positive comments on the car. The first two hours of the clinic started off dry but of course it had to rain the rest of the day. My car felt surprisly good in the rain considering it has a very stiff suspension and high performance summer tires. anyways, i learned a lot yesterday and i look forward to putting these new skills to the test at a future driving school. Thanks to all the instructors including Steve for being great instructors and volunteering Their time to put the clinic on.

I only saw one run where you killed the cones.

The next lesson to learn there is just "steer out of it".

Glad you had a good time Matt.

Yeah, the new M3's and all are good cars, but there is sonething about getting in an 02 or an E30 that just makes you comfortable. Kinda like a big, friendly golden labrador retriever that says, "come on, let's go play".

The Newer M3's, M5's, etc... all have that same quality, it's just more like a sabre-toothed labrador retriever.
