I got over 25 once with my Weber 38, all highway trip, ~70mph. I was surprised.

I get 25MPG consistently at 75-80MPH. Dual 40DCOEs, 300 Motorsport cam, 4 speed. No reason a reasonably stock 02 shouldn't be able to do this normally.

I need to convert to fuel injection badly.

I am going to pick up a 5 speed this weekend. I am not sure if the conversion will pay for itself or not it is a costly upgrade but I am going to do it anyway then I am going to look into DIS and fuel injection.

Wow, I think I need to do more careful tuning. My best so far with the Megasquirt EFI /ignition setup is 23.7 miles per US gallon (28.4 Miles / Imp Gallon or 9.9 L/100Km). But that was in mostly around-town driving and I do have a heavy foot (always "testing" the throttle response, hehe). I have yet to empty a tank where I have been mostly on the highway so still have that to look forward to.

In my defense, this is with a tired, stock 8.3:1 engine that burns 1Q oil per 300 miles, so maybe I that is not so bad. I want to see at leat 30mpUSg on the highway, though, dammit.

At least it is 10-15% better mileage than with my 32/36 and the performance is way up, too.

BTW, have you guys with front air dams noticed a definite difference in hwy mileage with/without? I seem to recall some mention that a dam helps.

Zenon

26 mpg overall, 21 mpg city and 29 highway, averaging about 70-75 mph during most trips on the Interstate. That's over about 6,000 miles total.

Before the 5-speed, I saw almost identical city mileage (as would be expected) and highway mileage between 26 and 27 mpg. That's about a seven percent increase with the 5-speed. Not worth it for expense, probably, but definitely worth it for conversation on trips.

All this is with an early '71 with an unopened stock 138k-mile engine and the stock 1-barrel Solex.

But note that some people would say that I'm not driving it hard enough--I usually shift between 3k and 4k rpm around town unless I'm really needing to get out of someone's way, with occasional forays north of 5k rpm and a self-imposed redline around 5.5k to stave off an engine rebuild as long as possible. I still have fun with it.

Does your car indicate speed that's reasonably accurate? If not then don't forget that your ODO will be reading wrong as well!!!! Hence maybe you haven't gone quite as far.

Me, hell, I only get over 20 if I drive on the highway and keep my foot fairly light, which never happens.
