This is on the lists of possible mods for the near future, so i am wondering exactly what the title says. Also these are going to be going a 70, the car will be street use, so i would like the e-brake. Thanks

the drums work ok, as long as you keep 'em adjusted.

The 320 drums work better, as long as you keep 'em adjusted.

I've been thinking of getting rear disks for my track car. Ireland sells a kit I believe that is reasonable price-wise and it's a bolt on application. I'm thinking these can help me brake a tad later into corners on the track.

just go with 250mm E21 drums. cheaper and a no-brainer unless you're on the track ALL the time. Also if you go rear discs you MUST do a bigger front conversion or it will be a waste. You'll need an adjustable bias valve even with bigger brakes up front.

there are many posts on this subject that you can find if you look. it is my understanding that the only thing other than looks, is that you won't need to adjust the drums anymore. BUT... many who install rear discs say that the back locks up WAY too much unless you turn them down heaps. When i put 250mm drums on it was night & day and I don't have vented fronts yet. front kit is waiting to go on and as soon as it does i'm sure i'll be able to lock up all 4 whenever and wherever.

unless you have $1000 to burn (i know the kit with the e-brake is about $700) with all the *extras* that go along with a project like that id just stick with the easy 250mm drums

Here's a little trick from an old racer... lol... If your rear (disc) brakes are locking up prematurely and you don't have a brake bias proportioning valve installed, just reduce the surface area of the pads. This can be done by either grinding or machining until you get the balance you're after.

However, I'll bet rear rear discs on an 02 won't make much of a difference if any in lap times vs. drums!

I've got rear disc on both my '02s using basically the same components supplied it the kits. Along with vented front brakes the stopping power is outstanding. The kits really are somewhat of a bargain in that they're really well engineered, all the components are new (except maybe reman calipers) and there's no homework for you to do...Just bolt the stuff of. Personally I think the conversion is worthwhile, even for a street car.

One of my '02s uses '77 320i calipers & rotors up front with a 320i master cylinder, VW rear calipers and E30 rear rotors. My other car uses the traditional non-tii big brake setup with Volvo calipers. Out back it uses VW non vented front rotors and Miata calipers (they dont fit well-don't waste your time) Both cars use stock brake plumbing except the addition of steel braided brake hoses. I drive these cars as hard as most street '02s get driven and I've NEVER had any problems with rear lockup. In fact the balance is surpsisingly good. Other's experiences may be different.

i hae the Aardvark kit, which is similar to the Ireland rear discs. With the Big brake front upgrade, I have not had a problem with rear lockup on the track on on the street.
