Hello everyone! I have a 1973 BMW 2002 Tii that I am looking to sell. It has some little rust spots on the exterior (nothing major), a locked right front brake caliper, and there seems to be a problem with the fuel injection (it idles rough and hesitates during acceleration). Everything is stock (even the tape player) and it has BBS wheels.

I have recently received an offer of $5500 for it and I was wondering if this would be an acceptable amount for the car in this condition.

I have little experience with these cars, so any advice you could give would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Are you mechanically inclined or, like me, mechanically deluded? Do you want a car as a hobby. Do you have a bit of cash to get it set-up correctly. As far as your car is concerned, it is perhaps, in my view anyway, the most desirable model. The last of the round lite tiis. Recognize that you need to get a pro to evaluate the k-fisch mech fuel injection. With a bit of assistance the car may become important to you. Tii's are bitchin' when they are running correctly. With care, you have a great car. If you don't care, take the money and run!

The offer of $5500 is probably pretty realistic, given the condition as described - fully sorted and cosmetically clean round light tii's can bring prices well into the mid 'teens, but from the sound of it, there's going to be a fair amount of detail work required to get your car from its current condition to that point (even if there's no significant rust repair needed).

If you're seriously interested in selling it, you might want to post some photos here, and also post ads in bimmers.com's '02 classifieds and on the Roadfly classifieds. You'll probably find you'll waste less time if you also provide general info (city/state) regarding the car's location so you don't have to respond to inquiries from folks on the far side of the country who aren't interested in buying a car long-distance.

First of all, thanks to everyone that replied (even if it was off topic) and no I am not this Robert you speak of. My name is David Hernandez and I live in california in a small town called Templeton (closest well known city would be San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles). To be honest, this is my father's car and there is sentimental value as well as pride in ownership. However, it is just sitting in our garage and we haven't been able to find time to work on the car, seeing as how we have just moved to Templeton and are still adjusting.

If possible, we would like to get the car in good running condition and sell it for something that it's worth, we are just debating whether we have the time and if it would be worth it moneywise to repair the car. Plus, we are scared of the K-fisch injection system. I have been taking auto body repair classes at the local community college and so I realize that even these little rust spots will be a big undertaking that we cannot acheive in the current state of disarray. But we were hoping we might be able to repair the injection and brake on our own.

To sum up: How much do you think it would be to repair the injection system and do you think we could do it ourselves? How much do you think it would cost for a decent rust repair? and still, is $5500 enough for this car?

Again thanks to everyone for helping me in this difficult decision and sorry I can't post pictures right now (don't have a digital camera).

Its hard to diagnose your tii from so far way but there is no overt reason to assume that the KF is out of wack. The running issues you've described could be a number of things that are much less costly than rebuilding the pump and so on

you might like to check out this 2002tii Fuel Injection System Manual

http://www.thetiiregister.com/pump/pump_guide_v1.pdf

from the tiiregister

if you can get the car back into good running it will sell itself

if you have time and inclination read through that manual and make sure the linkages are in spec and the idle is set to where you want it.

Some simple things to start with are to change the fuel filter.. who knows how clogged it might be after so many years.. thats like 10 bucks or something. Change the plugs, give it fresh gas, change the oil and so on.. just give the old girl a tune up!!

There is no reason to assume the running problems you describe are due to the KF.. there are a lot of much more simple-to-fix factors that you should start with. Cheaper too.

If it eventually does turn out to be the KF non of the rest of what you need to do will hurt anything and those operations will cost a lot less.

A nice running tii with little rust can go for a lot in the right market.. so it might be worth dicking around with it.

There are a number of good tii gurus around.. not sure about your area, but that might be worth you spending a few hundred for a tuneup by someone who knows their shit.

Any FAQers know a good reliable tii guru in his area??

well best of luck with it!

You are fortunate geographicall (in more ways than one). You should talk to Rob Torres At 2002 Haus (www.2002haus.com). He can put you straight if anyone can and he is local.

Rob was actually the one who made the offer for $5500. He says he has a client who wants to buy a slightly used Tii and he was going to restore it. So he was making the offer for his client and that is why we couldn't just ask him for his opinion of the offer.

Anyway, we declined his offer and are going to try getting it in good running condition and then try selling it again.

Thank you to anyone who took the time to even think about this post and who knows, you may be seeing it for sale on here soon...
