What could it be? I am going to adjust the valves- what should I look for? How do I diagnose a fubar. It has a 292 cam, big valves and springs ect... The car runs ok. Thanks

scary

got a stethascope? Or maybe a hoze you can stick in your ear and locate exactly where the tapping is coming from? Maybe just the timing chain rattleing or something

hey, I am new to the 02 scene, but from experience with other engines-- you probably have your solution already. adjust the valves. get your 02 book out and follow the instructions-- if you don't have a book, probably you should go buy one. :) it will detail the recommended gap and order of adjustment etc. in general (again this is not 02 specific) I would avoid tightening too much as this will increase the wear on your valves.. I would go with a slight tapping sound over stressing out the head. of course a big ass tapping sound is no good. but a slight little tap... thats not unhealthy in my book.

the timing chain could also be the culprit, make sure it is snug, but not too tight. use two fingers to pull it up and it should respond but hold tight after a finger width of movement.

hopefully someone will give you more specific advice???

If you have a 292 cam and an E12 head that has been resurfaced it is possible that you have valve clearance issues.

The older I get the better I was!

It's probably the valves, I have the same issue and just got the gasket from Bavauto.com so as soon as the snow melts and I get some good weather I'll adjust them.
