when a site says that headers are 2.25".....

is that only refering to the peice that meets the resinator, and is there a difference other than that peice. and/or is there anything other than that different on a 2.25 than on a 1.75 header. in other words i have 1.75" stahl headers and i was wondering if i could just cut and re-weld a 2.25 pipe on the end of them instead of spending hundreds of dollers on new headers.

no no and no.

please don't do that... and whatever you do, dont' post a pic of it. You think the intake was bad...

but no, seriously. Things cost money for a reason. Do your homework, check things out. Bigger headers have better flow. The design, flow, curves, and tubing diameter etc are all factors for more hp, you've got to start right from the block and carry it right through to the end of the exhaust system. You want some more power for cheap, take a look at Zenon's site and get a megasquirt project going. Probably the best bang for buck out there right now. Spend a couple hun on the MS, pillage the scrapyards for injection parts, and boom, ponies.

Unless you have other mods that match the exhaust such as higher comp. a cam with more overlap, you don't need a bigger header in fact just going to a bigger header with out those other ugrades you will lose power, due to the loss of back pressure. You have to keep in mind that everything works together.

responses below are right on. Your 1.75 Stahl headers are probably all you want if your engine is not uprated in several areas. Once you have a "built" engine, then you may want to research exhaust systems. A premier 2002 tuner/builder at Sears Point Raceway showed me amazing results from his own designed headers for a powerful M10 engine. I will eventually have them made for my Inka A4. Now, I run 2.25 Stahls with an old Ray Korman favorite muffler, that has a German name I cannot find right now. The mufflers have been NLA for many years in USA.

1971 Sahara, 1972 Inka tii with Alpina A4 Injection. Both cars have too many upgrades for the "signature" square. 1987 M325ic daily driver( all E30M3 except chassis).
