5 speed transmission from a 1980 320i. Getrag 245

Will this trans fit in my 76 2002? Will the stick fit in the right place? Will there need to be any mods to swap this trans? If this won't work what will with little to no mods?

relatively minor mods. Check the board's archives and/or go to Rob Torres' "2002Autohaus" web site--he (among others) has a kit that gives you all the mounting hardware (and a shortened shift linkage) to bolt the 5 speed into your '02.

Many folks have done it--mine will be underway shortly...

case 5 speed isn't too bad, long as nothing is broken and the synchros are OK. How many miles on the tranny?

Sorry--it's 2002Haus, not 2002 Autohaus. That's whatcha get doing things from memory!

68k on the trans coming out of a wrecked bmw

Make sure it's an E21 - 5 speed with a 3 bolt ouput flange rather than the 4 bolt. The guibo is much stronger, will take much more abuse. The 2002 4 speed has a 4 bolt configuration. However, you'll need to have a 3 bolt flange welded to your current driveshaft but that can be done when you have it shortened.

Metric Mechanic has a wack of info on this subject including complete conversion kits if required. Give them a call, they're very helpful.
