well - went to rethread the cylinder head and the fucker had already been helicoiled and crossthreaded again. Helicoil came out, words exchanged, ect ect. Fuckin cars, man. Fortunately i have a rebuilt cylinder head laying around and most of the gaskets. What parts other than a gasket set should I get here??

I feel your pain Pat... I just installed my new to me used motor and now I'm thinking of replacing the head with a fresh one I have on the shelf...

I should have done it when it was on the engine stand but I was too lazy...

At least the head change is straight forward... I once saw the Cunningham BMW team change a head in 20 minutes @ the Monterey Historics...

All I can think of is you should have the timing cover surfaced with the head or it may leak around those areas...

machine shop with heliarc capabilities can weld up the bad spark plug hole and then recut/retap it for you a lot cheaper than a new head--esp if the old head is otherwise good.

cheers

Why not reinstall a new heli coil it's threads are probably ok. hte only problem may be breaking the tang off the heli coil after its been installed.

Don't worry about the world ending today,

Pat, If the Helicoil screwed out, It's no big deal. Just install a new Heli-Coil. It's a heck of a lot easier than changing the head. But, If you still have the head off the spare engine, it's newly rebuilt. Even the head bolts are new.

We're going to decide what to do this weekend. It's not a big deal - just frustrating.
