an abundance of sensors

so, I plucked this water neck off of a dead 318i and I would like to use it to control my electric fan - that bulb/capilary thermostat is garbage.

I am guessing that one of these things is a swith for the fan, one is a sender for the temp guage and one just talks to the efi computer.

Does anybody know which one I might be the fan switch, and can I just wire it to a relay?

Here are the markings on the sensors:

A: 120 deg.C 6-24v - VDO - 45 deg C +/- 3deg C

B 12 v 40 W - 35 deg C 8 sec. -

C unitelligable part number (too dirty)

Thanks for the enlightenment!

Alright I will take a stab. A is the fuel injection temp sensor(this is the only one I am not quite sure on as it also activates the temp warning light I think). B is the Cold-start thermo time switch. C is the Gauge temp sensor. None of them as currently installed are at a temperature sensitivity/activation point that will properly drive a cooling fan relay. Sorry.

oh, that's right. I bet the 318 had its fan bolted to the pulley just like an 02!

I can get a thermo-switch tho.

Go to the dealership and order the switch that goes into the bottom of the 320i radiator... This is what you need. What you're seeing on the top of the neck is NOT likely a thermoswitch. When you get that part you will be able to mount it in the water neck, so don't be worried that it's supposed to mount in a 320i radiator...

You want two things in your neck, 1 is for the gauge, the other will be this switch. The single pole that you already have will work for the gauge.

I've just been through this, I think the part was reasonable. Got mine at BMW Bellevue, they're available in two different heat ranges.

See you tommorrow...

If you get your 320 fan switch from bavauto I think there are 3 different temps. I'm not sure which one you would want though, since you are mounting it in the water neck (instead of the bottom of the radiator like the 320) it will see a much higher temp for the same engine temp. So maybe you wan't the highest temp so the fan doesn't run all the time. Don't forget to wire up a relay, that switch isn't really designed to carry the full current of the fan.

Ok, A is:08 TEMPERATURE SENDING UNIT/WARNING CONTACT 45CEL

B: TEMPERATURE-TIME SWITCH 35CEL 8S

C:06 TEMPERATURE SENSOR, WATER 20CEL 2500 OHM

NOne of these are on a switch. What you are looking for.. Is on the 318i rad. on the bottom.

Or on the E28 528e.. right on the top drivers side.

15 on this list is actually 2 sensors.. 91 degree temp switch and a 99 degree temp switch.

15 TEMPERATURE SWITCH 91CEL 1 61311364272 $21.65 See SI 120787777

15 TEMPERATURE SWITCH 99CEL 1 61311364273 $21.65

Have a loook

Those will (should I haven't tried yet) fit in the B position. That's where i'll be putting my electric fan switch.
