Are the horsehair seat pads interchangeable between the older (pre-74) and newer cars?

A fellow board member is offering me a set, but they are for a 75-76 model. My car is a 72. Can they be modified to fit?

What would be the part number for the older ones? REALOEM doesn't show a part # for seat pads.

TIA

The seat section pads are the same, 1967-1976. I think the backrest sections may have a difference due to the headrest posts but should be able to trim, if going from a later 2002 to an earlier.

Looks like you're right, something about the 1975 and 1976 seats but I would think some trimming would work. If you can locate a nice 320i, save the horsehair padding out of the rear seat as well, that can be trimmed to fit the 2002 rear seat frame.

or basically identical with the E21 seats (the E21 began production before the 02 was discontinued) at least as to frame and stuffing--that would explain the different p/n's for the pads. Also, the quality of the OEM pads went downhill after about 1971 or 72, and really got bad with the squarelight cars.

The pads in my '69 are all original (except for a partial restuffing of the driver's seat cushion) while the 73 has had both front seat bottoms and both back seat halves restuffed, and most squarelights I've seen were down to the springs (the pads had completely disintegrated) by the time the cars were 12-15 years old.

You could be right Mike, on the 320i seats, the only difference could be the number of pleats in the vinyl; 320i seats have a wider pleat. I can't seem to download the 2002 catalog on the wallothnesch website ( I can on the home computer ), it has all of the part numbers as well, interior seatpads as well.

That is the case. Using the part #'s I was given for the 75-76 pads, I get a reference for the 320i.

Mike, what did you use to re-stuff your 73? I am trying to repair the driver's seat on my 72tii, including using good condition vinyl from a rear seat for the seat cover.

I read on the other board's archives tha Al Canuck used modern materials for re-stuffing the seats on his now departed 76. Al, if you are around, do you sell a kit that I can look at?

I'm around, although not nearly as much as I would like to be. We use a combination of bottomskin foam, underlay, and burlap. All pretty standard upholstery shop supplies, which should be easy to source locally. Having said that, when we repad them, we also build up the outer bolster just a bit, so we can avoid the awful overstuffed look that so many upholstery shops wind up with.

not to have a split seat...

Al pretty much described how my front seats were restuffed--I had an upholstery shop do it, as it was decomposed enough to require some pretty heavy-duty replacing--beyond my ability as a trimmer...

Damn!

All this talk about restuffing seats!

I have my new old stock horsehair pads just waiting, had some extra cash come in, then yesterday my wife takes one of our cats into the vet. Let's just say she is still going to have to be sitting on a pillow whenever we drive the 02.
