The light pattern is far better than old halogen sealdbeams. Pluss you can choose the brightness of the bulbs. Be sure to use a relay or you'll burn out you high low switch and or cause a fire. I know that first hand.

All you need to know is here.

I bought the H4 without the high beam. The box says High Beam/Low Beam but the supplier suggested I just buy only the low beam because the high beam tends to get you pulled over.

The H4 is illegal because its only been tested for motorcycle use. It's approved for off road use only. You're using two motorcycle lights. Just becareful when you adjust them and you should be OK.

H4 refers to the bulb. The lights in left hand drive places (like the USA) dip to the right and vise versa in the UK. If you look at the pattern of an H4 headlight you can see that the oncomming traffic is spared on low beam.

How did you just buy low beam H4's? H4 are duel filiment bulbs, high and low.

I run 90/100 watt bulbs in my Volvo and have never had a problem with the police.

it isn't that they are only motorcycle tested but that the european cutoff isn't technically legal in the US. The european cutoff utilizes much more of the light because in europe all street signs must be lit. In the US the DOT beampattern has a lot of scatterlight -- random bits of light which spray everywhere to light up streetsigns and soforth. Anyways, the Hella H4 ECE has the european style cutoff and while being technically illegal is far superior and puts much more like on the road (400% more??) and out of other peoples eyes. In the picture you can see how it has a low cutoff to the left but then flares off to the right at a 45 degree angle -- this is standard with all european cutoff lenses be them bosch, cibie, hella, etc they will all be similar. If anyone has any questions don't hesitate!

I've been using the Hella H4's in my car since 1978, and I've never been pulled over for these headlights. I've got everything wired so that I can run the high beams with my yellow Cibie foglights - it's great for fast nightime driving! And I've never burned out the high beam switch with the stock bulbs in these headlights.

I just went out and tried them. I've haven't dirven the car since I've installed them, and yes I do have the high beam.

It might have been the discussion that if I didn't change the relay I wouldn't have the high beam that led me to believe that.

I took their word for it not really careing given we were going to install driving/fog lights anyway.

My car had H4's on it when I got it, it is constantly burning out the highbeam mechanism :(

I have the car in getting work done on it at the moment, I might get the car to an Auto electrician and get them to put relays and the biggest brightest bulbs they can to give me some decent power at night - the old ones were in need of adjustment too.
