I just started a car that has been sitting for sometime ( 4 years at least) and the car misfires, which was ok I guess for the time being. The other thing I noticed was that the car has very low power, almost like a tired engine. I haven't checked on the compression but there was some valve noise in the car.

1. Can I assume that the head may be the culprit for what feels like the car has almost no power ?

2. Could it be that it was just barely started and try to run it for sometime before I change the head ?

3. What about the misfire, could the carb be dirty or old (dual barrel solex)?

4. I disconnected a return line that was attached with something on it to the carb, I just connected the fuel pump directly to the carb. Can that be a problem.

more to come ?

Thanks

The timing maybe off. I will have to check with light but, one thing is for sure, the mark on the crank & the notch on the distributor or off from each other, which makes me think something is off. I couldn't see the damn little ball inside the flywheel, but that should tell me what is wrong.

set the timing, set the valve clearance and change to oil with a 20w 50 before you do anything else. if has been sitting that long your oil may have turned to gunk and glogged the screen in the oil pump, especially if there was any water/coolant in the engine, which will make your valves chatter like crazy. I would blame the dizzy before anything else, but you should do as much prep as possible before starting an egine that has been sitting that long.

drain the gas tank before anything else !

look under the right rear corner for a small drain bolt in the bottom of the gas tank - remove(PROTECT YER EYES!!) AND DRAIN - REFILL WITH

NEW GAS. REPLACE THE SPARK PLUGS

CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER 20W/50 ONLY

ADJUST THE VALVES COLD (0.006" )

now try it again. Inspect all the gas hoses once started and replace any that become WET.

changed fluids (oil, gas), tune up parts (rotor, cap, point and condensor, spark plugs & wires, new bosche coil). All this was done before the car was started. I replaced the coil with a blue coil and left the resistor there, can that be a problem or it is ok ?

Thanks

Make sure that you have all the plug wires in the correct firing order, also make sure that they are on the plugs all the way. Did you gap the plugs when you changed them?? They should be at .025".
