Need your 38/38 jetting formula Plus pic of new motor

I've been driving around on a very tired stock motor ( 3 broken compression rings) for a long long time. The second gear synchros have been shot ever since I've owned it (8years)

Well, I finally got my new setup back from Brian's shop, M-ten Motorweke in North bend, WA, and WOW! Who knew?!! This thing pulls like a monster.

New configuration:

9.5:1

292

38/38

5-speed

3:90 diff

Here's my question:

How do you sea-level, 9.5:1, 292 drivers have your 38/38's jetted?

My used 38 came with :

45 idles

185 air cor.

140/137 mains

There was a pretty bad stumble right at transition, so I put in 55 idles. That helped a bit, but not much. I know that the mains need to be bigger, but I'm not sure how much.

Has anyone found the perfect jetting for this setup? (9.5:1, 292)

thanks,

steve

I think that the Weber 38 is a bit too large a carb for a stock motor. Not enough air volume at lower rpms to get the best effect through the big barrels. So it has to be set "too" rich. Always smells "fuely." I wish there was a synchronous Weber 32. 34, or 36 to try. I've listed my settings below for an older post.

And, I see you have the RamFlo 1000 flammable air cleaner. Be careful, a carb-backfire will torch that foam.

From an old post:

Original out-of-the-box (from Maximillian):

Idles-45

Mains-142

Air Corr-185

Current:

Idles-55

Mains-140

Air Corr-170

I think that it's at least a little better than the original 38's jetting. It's rich at idle, but, I thought that the stumble around the neighborhood was leanness because not enough air was flowing through the big barrels at lower RPM to draw adequate fuel through the main jets. So I have bumped the idle jets since they are in operation during transition to full mains.

This was based on very limited knowledge of carb function, so my theory may not be accurate.

I have also converted the 38DGES to manual choke. It seems to run better around town with the choke knob pulled out 1/8 - 1/4". Again, more richness at low RPM seemed to help.

The bar is from Walloth Nesch.

I think that my "dual topic post" was confusing, too much information,

I am just wondering if anybody has figured out the ideal 38/38 jetting for the following configuration:

9.5:1 CR

292 cam

running at sea level

thanks

Yeah, or an asynchronous 34/38!
