A couple of months ago I was rear-ended in my (then just purchased) 1974 2002. It did no damage to my body work but it did collapse the passenger side rear bumper shock and mount. My mechanic and my body shop had been looking for weeks to find replacements, but to no avail.

Phocus had a parts car he needed to get rid of, and while I couldn't take the whole car I was interested in the bumper parts. Phocus said "Sure! Come on over!" "No charge," he said. When I got to his place tonight he'd already done most of the disassembly and proceeded to pull the parts right there for me - exactly the parts I needed.

Several minutes later he had pulled the parts and cleaned them up a bit, and I reached for my wallet and said "I know you said you wouldn't charge me, but since you've gone to all the trouble to get the parts -"

"No no, don't worry about it," he said.

"No really, here take $40 -"

"No, I don't want your money," he said.

"Well, how about $20, will you take $20?"

"No," he said, as he handed me my new bumper parts in a plastic bag, so I wouldn't even have to get my hands dirty.

I thought, Man, you drive a hard bargain.

One of the great things about our shared obsession is that we get to meet people like this, people who aren't interested in making a buck but just in helping out other people who love their '02s.

Thanks, Phocus.
