I replaced my alternator bushings last night, and now the red "L" light is glowing ever-so-glimly. So far it's actually so dim that it's hard to see unless it's dark out. The light does seem to get a tad brighter when auxiliary junk like fans is turned on.

The alternator may have gotten a little bump during the process of getting the bushings out and back in. Is it possible this knocked some of the internals in a bad way? I've checked all the connections and the fuses multiple times.

Maybe it's a sign to upgrade to the e21 alt....

The shop replaced a triode and it has been working fine ever since.

could easily be your voltage regulator as well, which is easily tested. just jump the terminals of the blue and black wires leading to the regulator, start the car, and bring the rpms up to about a grand. if the light shuts off - the regulator's your trouble . . .

Are you talking about the bushings that support the Alt or are you talking about the brushes inside. If you are talking about the brushes it may take a few hours of driving for them to seat in so that your alt produces full power.

Okay, so I tested the alternator output and it's giving 14.5volts. I also replaced the regulator--I was sure that was going to be it, but the new regulator didn't have any effect on the "L" light. Could it still be the alternator?....The only other thing I can think to do is to recheck all the connections to the alt, whcih I'll do when I get home.
