I've decided that traffic is so bad the stock horn on my '74 is no longer adequate so I picked up two sets of airhorns (for my 533i too) at Harbor Freight on sale. I'd like to retain the stock wiring and tap into the existing horn wiring. The AHs come with a relay. Can you just connect to the existing horn wires where they attach to the electric horn? How have any of you airhorn users wired the setup? TIA.

I love my air horns... they have saved me from distracted daydreamers a few times.

Run a fat (12 or better 10 AWG) red power wire with an inline fuse holder direct from the battery positive terminal (use a suitable crimp-on ring terminal to attatch to the clamp bolt) to the new air horn relay's contacts, then the same guage of wire from the other relay contact to the horn compressor's pos. Use the same gauge of wire (ideally brown) to run a ground from the compressor's neg to a convenient spot on the body. That takes care of the power supply side of the circuit for the air horn compressor.

Run a small (18 AWG is fine) wire from one of new relay's coil (solenoid) terminals to ground (again, ideally you'd make this one brown). Now, tap into an original horn power wire (green with yellow stripe) and run the new tapped in wire (18 AWG is fine) to the other coil terminal on the new relay. That handles the "control" part of the new circuit.

Now, the air horns will blow with the original horns but without adding any current to the original wiring (which is too small to properly support the compressor). With a solid power feed, the air horns' response should be almost instant.

Zenon

So very anti-social but oh so amusing! I am amazed those guys don't get shot...

On a similar note, I recently helped my bro install a compressor and 1-gal air tank setup in his Jeep so he could run some real Grover 24" truck horns (he had car-size air horns before). It all **just** fits. Volume aside, I think the sound being associated with big-rigs is what really gets attention - a conditioned response. Wish I could find room in the '02!

As a condition of helping him install the horns, I made him swear to use them only for good and not gratuitously. He likes to think he is "blowing the other drivers to safety". ;-) Usually a small blip is all he needs to use, though.

It isn't all frivolous - we also installed a quick-connect so he can hook up an air hose to fill his tires, which is kinda cool.

Zenon

Nice and simple too. Blunt's airhorn website is funny. With those big compressors and airtanks you could power a set of airjacks on your '02 along with the horns. Me so horny.
