What's the difference?

Realoem = 11421258039

On my car now bought from dealer = 11421278059

2002 Subaru WRX Wagon (at least it's a 2002)

recently. I was talking to the parts guy at my local dealer yesterday and he mentioned that. He also said they can now lookup '02 parts with the seven digit VIN. I guess we'll all need new ETKs. I'm going to get some filters on Tuesday so I'll find out.

They both will work for a 2002, or any M10 / S14 with a spin-on filter.

11 42 1 258 039 was the original part for the 2002.

11 42 1 278 059 is a higher burst strength can, rated at 30 Bar (435 psi)

The 059 filter is 14 grams heavier, and has a 30% higher list price.

Many aftermarket filters don't offer a distinct different part for these two -- Mahle does, but I can't remember what the numbers are (OC2?)

Either one is fine, the stronger one might be good for cold weather, but the I think the insides are the same.

CD can probably fill in more info, but there was a TSB years ago that said that the 039 should NEVER be used on a '02.

The '059 is the correct filter.

ETK has the 039 listed for '02s, when the 059 is listed for early 320i. Not sure why this is the case and if there were ever production changes over the years with the filters.

In the past I have used 039 filters. I use only 059s now.

BTW, with the ETK you have always been able to use a 7 digit VIN to look up a car.

cars with a seven digit VIN (this ETK is a 1998 version). You can search newer cars with the last seven digits of the VIN with it (those with 17 digit VINs). I also have a 2001 ETK with the models current in 2001 back through E28s vintage and again, it will read from the last seven digits of the VIN. Now maybe since the old car ETK vintage 1998 was released they have incorporated the seven digit VINs, but not at that time. The 1998 old car ETK is not the Mobile Tradition version either. There is also a database difference between my 1998 old car ETK and my 2001 newer car ETK, and they cannot reside on the same computer as they cause conflicts at installation. The OBDC and SysAdmin are different on each.
