I'm getting anxious to install my new ansa center resonator and muffler, and after doing some archive searching I can see I'm short one critical part: the exhaust bracket that attaches to the back of the transmission. Normally this wouldn't be a problem as I'd go and get one from the dealer, but I'm not sure if it can be fit to the back of a 320 5 speed. For clarity's sake, I'm talking about the highlighted stuff in the picture:

Can I use this 4 speed bracket on my 5 speed, or am I going to have to get more creative?

I fear you may need to get more creative at least I had to. I bent up a piece of sheet metal picking up tranny bolts and running back along side the exhaust pipe. I hose clamped the "bracket" around some sheet metal I wrapped the pipe with. I didn't want drumming from the exhaust and wanted support so I isolated the bracket to some degree with the sheet metal to cut down on the transmission of noise.

If there is a real part I would definitely get it but the exhaust really needs support or it will tend to crack from the motion of the motor.

Yeah I got a 2" or whatever size yours is U clamp from a auto parts store (whatever your OD of your header is) and fabbed up a link to the existing dowel onto the tranny-- I used a welder though- so not sure what tools you have at your dispense.

I did away with it and haven't any any problems since 1983, although there is probably enough resonance in the exhaust system to crack the downpipe or resonator. I've seen this on my father's 1974.

I have been using the Ansa sport resonator with a stock Ebenshpratzer or fartzer muffler. Time to change the fartzer.

When installing my 5-speed recently (albeit with an Ireland exhaust, not Ansa though) I had no problems just moving over the exhaust hanger off of my old 4-speed. If you don't have one, I believe 2002Haus sells them.

Alright, thanks guys. I figured it wouldn't be as easy as swapping a bracket, so I'll have to crawl under the car and see what I can come up with. Since I bought the Ansa system from Bav Auto, I'll give them a call to see if they have any suggestions as I'm sure they've run into this problem before.
