1975 BMW 2002 Emission

Can some one help me identify this part. i believe its part of the emission system. its located right behind the alternator just above the oil filter. (see attached pictures). It applears like some kind of a valve. on the top it looks like a hose should be attached to it. i believe it goes into the air filter box. on the side there which is threaded hole about the size of a quarter. i think something should be screwed into it, what is suppose to go in it, i have no idea. i had a 1974 carburetor install on my 1975 02. this thing is making noise like there is a leak in the exhauset system. what is the name of this part and where can i get it. if i switch to a 32/36 weber what happens to the hose from this part. thanks

I take them off and I have used the steel return line as the feeder line . takes alittle doing but ....

thanks for the info. you are right. it is the diverter valve. since my car no longer requires smog check, i will be taking off the belt to the air pump. i suppose that will stop the flow thru the diverter valve. which one is the steel return line if i decide to go that route?. thanks
