Does anyone know anything about Solex 40 RH carbs? They came on a Hans Glas 1700GT, and I can't seem to find too much info on them. They are dual Solex 40s which is like the ones that came in the 2002ti but Solex 40 RH models and not the Solex 40 sidedrafts. I might be able to get some NOS sets of these carb systems w/ manifolds for the Hans Glas 1700gt. I'm wondering if they could be fitted to a early 2002 head. I was told that the carb manifolds for a smaler bmw 1600 head could bolt to a 2002 w/ some restricted airflow. I guess it depends on the inlet size for the 1700 GT. The car is pretty rare, and were high performance coupes that were produced before Hans Glas' company was bought by BMW and the produced the BMW 1600gt. These are carbs off the Glass 1700gt and I thought they would be pretty cool on a 2002 for a vintage canyon racer. The Glas GT linup was produced May 1965 until September of 1967. Only 5,378 GTs were built including the 362 convertibles. Out of those two thirds were 1300 and one third 1700 GTs.

AS 1700 GT:

Coupe, 2+2 seating (also 2 door convertible), 4 cylinder, 4 cycle inline water-cooled motor, 1682 cc, 100 DIN Hp, two 40 RH side draft carburetor by Solex, 4-speed manual transmission (also available with a 5-speed manual transmission), single disk dry clutch, rear wheel drive with split drive shaft, all steel unibody construction, independent front wheel suspension and fixed rear axle with leaf springs and Panhard stabilizer link, hydraulic disk brakes up front and drum brakes in the rear, 6 volt electrical system, length: 4055mm, width: 1550mm, height: 1280mm (Convertible: height: 1350mm), wheelbase: 2320mm, track: 1260mm in front and 1200 at the rear, tires 155 HR 14, curb weight: 920kg (Convertible: 960kg), GVWR: 1200kg, top speed: 183km/h, fuel consumption: 12 Liter/100km, tank capacity: 55 liter

Seems sorta similar to BMW Euro-style engine specs. Just wondering what you all thought about the application, and whether or not the solex 40 RH w/ manifolds for a Hans Glas 1700 gt would work on a bmw 2002?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I've got a book on Solex Carbs published by Speedsport in UK 1973. It has a page with a discription of each model carb and an exploded view parts list. I Think I know where the book is packed away but it may take a few days to find it. My email is ljlowman@cox.net. Send an email and i'll get back with you.

If any Solex junkies who want to archive some info read this i'd like to scan the whole book and have it posted on somebodys website.

The BMW 1600GT and Glass 1700GT share only the same body, otherwise the running gear and rear suspension ( I'm not sure about the front suspension) are completely different. The two engines are different. The Solex RH sidedrafts are a single barrel design while the Solex PHH carbs are a twin barrel design. Their manifolds are therefore completely different. I doubt the Glas 1700GT head is the same as the BMW 1600 head, and I don't think you can mount those carbs on a BMW unless you make custom manifolds. In England there are kits that used the single barrel english sidedrafts (like those found on the MG or Volvo) made for the BMW engine. Perhaps one of these manifolds might be a close match for the RH carbs.

Again, the Solex PHH 40s and SolexRH carbs don't even resemble each other.

One of my friends has a BMW1600GT (Glas bodied coupe). It's motor is from the BMW 1600ti. The Glas 1700GT motor is very different. I've seen it as well, and it looks more like an Audi motor.

Thanks, I was curious about the setup. I like what I have, but also enjoy the history and tinering with the setup. I thought it would be cool to set up a glas 2002gt so to speak. Thanks for the info, I knew someone would know about the 1700gt setup, and the Solex 40 RH config.

Those carbs do not have floats like the BMW does. If you look at the drawings above you will see two fuel pumps. One supplies fuel to the carbs and one removes from the carbs. I wouldn't mess with them unless I had a manual. G
