El Paso, coming out of Austin...

IF we do decide to drive, wed be heading down to austin via shreeveport (would be overninght stop #1). i have friends in austin where we could stay a day or so to refresh/recharge.

ok then from austin west on 290 to the 10, then basically the 10 all the way across to L.a., where we have another friend where we can chill out before the five hour ride to san hose up I-5.

Anybody take this route before? Is it mountainy? Mountainy enough to worry about adjusting the .38? weve been talking and we really *want* to roadtrip it, instead of flying. it will just be too much fun!!

My memory of a trip like that was mainly about how big Texas was/is. I don' t think that you will need to do anything to your carb for those gently rolling hills.

hmm... yah i am looking it over on mapfest and its going to take 8hours just to reach el paso (aka leave texas). that would be the goal, to get the hell out of texas .. then the next day prolly go a lil slower, take more stops, maybe hit some roadside attraction action. i remember the last time i was in the new mexico/arizona area the most awesome sights were the huge desert boneyards full of old cars, just sitting there waiting for some jackass to KustomiZe em.... i guess thats better than just sitting there, but anyways,...

next will be phoenix, then l.a. the el paso to phoenix leg will be about 6 hours of driving (leaving 2-4 for sidetracking) then phoenix to l.a. 5.5 (leaving 2.5-4.5 for goofing around). then five hours to san hoe. im leaving in plenty of time for stops as you can see. most likely, stopping well *outside* of town to save $ on motels. the baby is reallly reallly reallllllly into horses and trains and other wild-wild-west stuff so if we can find some horseride or goof ranch we might stop for a few hours. im wondering about a small trailer....

I have made a similar run in a 2002 with a 32/36 dcddgav carb with no problems or adjustments.

No need to adjust the carbs. Be wary of cops in West Texas. It doesn't take much imagination when you look at some of those small towns, to understand where they get a major source of their revenue. Made this trip in my Kenworth more times than I care to count.

I don't mean to be a bubble burster, but that sounds like a rough trip in a noisy '02 with the wife and young kid. It's a lot of work to keep the kid entertained.

Took the Touring to Vegas a few years ago. Took I-10 from San Antonio to Phoenix (made it halfway thru' New Mexico the first day). A few little up and downers before El Paso but basically boring. Keeping awake is the hardest thing getting to El Paso.

Good luck.

w/out stops it's 4 hrs. to Tucson. Take my # w/ you in case any deamons raise there nasty heads along the way. It's 520/375-7880 during weekdays (Santa Cruz County Bldg. Dept.) or 520/287-5378 evenings/weekends. I'm 65 miles due south of Tucson, but have a lot of contacts there if you end up needing anything.

Yah, thats why im keeping plenty of time open for stops and looking around, other than the B'ham to shreeveport run, then the austin to el paso. we have a lil 7" DVD player and the laptop DVD player, and I can easily wire in an input to the car's stereo system. (Which is actually non-functional at the moment but im planning on making it work with Jenna's portable MP3 player as a the main source input.)

Im also planning on mounting his seat up high (dont worry, it will be secure) so he can see out the windows easily. Mounting the 7" DVD player (usually I use this on his airplane flights) to the back of the rear seat will be a bit of a trick. I have his seat in the middle of the rear seat, so i'll have to come up with something that will hold the player right in front of him between the two front seats, while staying out of the way.... maybe something in the headliner?

more to think about, and more to figure on... Thanks to everyone offering stops/and help along the way!! Still have months and months to plan, etc... :)
