I'm going to be doing a clutch job on my new 74 2002 - want to know what else i should replace in the process. I figured this would suffice - disc, pressure plate, TO bearing, guibo, tranny mount, MAYBE - rear main seal, shifter linkage, center bearing, ect. Also im going to fluch the cooling system, add pertronix, new tranny and diff oil, some 20/50 - just to be safe, wires, plugs, ect. Anything else i should do to a car with an unknown service history?

Also - what oil for the tranny and diff?

I always recommend brake service for cars with dim pasts. Look to see if the master cylinder is leaking, check the rear wheel cylinders for leaks, buy and install new hoses, bleed entire system, clutch too!

+1 on the Pilot Bearing. I just took a tranny off of a Engine I bought and the Pilot bearing was in pieces.

The car shifted funny when I test drove it, it did not grind but I had a weird time finding 2nd and 3rd gear. After talking it apart I found the shifter mounts on the tranny were 4-5 turns loose and the Pilot bearing was toast.

Replacing the Rear crank shaft seal and plate gasket will not hurt. Use Anti Sieze on the release bearing where it slides on the tranny shaft... (tip Merlin told me).

Good Luck,

Robert

Parts to buy

Clutch kit that should include pressure plate, TO bearing, Disk and an alignment tool. you need to buy BOTH the needle and ball bearing for the pilot bearing as you wont know which you need. Always have the fly wheel surfaced if there is a hint of a ridge on it. Ours is a steped fly wheel so it will cost a hair more 20-30 bucks.

I use and have always used automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in my manual gearbox. It's never caused a problem. In fact we used it in our 1980 320i racecar. We ran the same gearbox for years and never had a failure. The shifting is much better...

I'm doing a 5-speed and LSD conversion this spring... Can't wait!!!

Clean the splines really well, then lube. Also replace output shaft seal and shifter shaft seal. If the shifter is sloppy, get a shifter rebuild kit.

Hey Pat,

Just buy a BavAuto kit for $225. It contains: an alignment tool, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, rear engine seal, pilot bearing, all transmission seals, exhaust gaskets, and a pivot pin. By the way, the car is ready to go. You could probably even get Nick to drive his M20 '02 down from A&M one weekend to help you do the swap.

Saw that the other day. One of my e21's needs a clutch and I've been thinking of getting one of these kits.
