So I finally got a few days off from work to take a look at the motor from my '74 tii. It has 33,000 miles on it and seems to be in good shape other than a bit of neglect.

I've been just detailing the motor and replacing all rubber lines and intake gaskets. Finally get around to changing the injection belt. So I pull the top cover off.

I have not changed anything yet as I am confused. See pictures.

Picture#1, So I line up the lower pulley at the "notch" with the center part of the lower timing belt cover per the manual. I noticed that the fuel injection wheel does NOT line up with the top cover. See red marks.

Picture#2 I think I verified the cam, both lobes appear to be down on #1, I put a screwdriver in the spark plug hole and it appears that the piston is at the top. Take a look at the distributor, there are two marks, one deeper in red, and the other two (rotor and the shallower notch) are marked in blue.

I looked at the flywheel (picture #3), I've highlighted the OT and Z.

I am missing something dumb here or is the injection about 180 off? Or am I off. Or is the lower pulley 180 off (I know you can mess it up putting it on)

Thanks

Well it answers the question sort of. I have no tranny attached to check the Z ball.

I know that lower pulley can also be rotated 180 which can throw everything off.

Are the other assumptions about cam timing and distributor and flywheel correct enough to assume my injection is actually 180 out?

The car seemed to run ok prior, but I have nothing to compare it against. So I could have been down on power and not really know it.

You're on TDC for the #4 cylinder, not #1. Turn the crank 360 degrees, everything will line up correctly. Cam lobes need to be pointing down for TDC on that particular cylinder.

Looks like the distributor is installed 180 off from its intended position, but that's no big deal, the wires just get swapped on the cap.

LOL Wow, I confused cylinder #1 and #4 with the valve cover off. I guess that is what I get for trying to find TDC after spending two very long days cleaning and painting.

It must have been the paint fumes.... Thanks!!

I'll probably reset the distributor once I am actually at TDC on #1 instead of #4....
