First time ever (that we know) 4-speed automatic in a 2002

Well we may be on the verge of completing a first a 4 speed automatic into a 2002. My self and others have never heard or seen this done, if we aren’t who was the first? I know some of the purists out there are screaming why anyone would want a 2002 automatic to have other then the larger trans tunnel. Others go it’s an automatic why bother. Well simply put if your wife will only drive an automatic and wants more power, speed, comfort and fuel injection what do you do? We started with Andy’s wife’s 73 2002 and added a fuel injected 318i (m10) engine. Now for the hard part, how do you get a 4hp into a 2002? Well it’s a tricky fit but as you can see we got her in. Now utilizing this trans we will be converting the speedometer to an electrical drive unit. I will be posting more pic’s but my cameras battery died.

Enjoy

Very nice conversion. 4 speed auto, why not, I love seeing what people can do with these cars.

What is that big (what looks to be a power wire) running on along the tunnel? I am not sure I'd feel comfortable running that so close to moving parts.

If the drive shaft can get that far out you have bigger problems. If the drive shaft hits that point it MAY come into the passinger compartment. Its safer then having it run under the main body as it can get scraped easly. Running the cable though the passinger compartment makes it hard to inspect.

Im more worried about the cable coming loose and dropping down on the driveshaft.

In the passenger compartment you are far less likely to have issues with the wiring over time (oil, water, crud can't be good for the shielding). Run it along the factory harness on the left side inside the car and make it look factory.

The relocation is not complet as we had to make sure the 4 speed auto would fit. Once we get done mounting it you could hang from it.

That is really cool. Now if you could figure out how to wire in the electronics of an hp22eh with the sport mode thing...THAT would be TOO cool.

Question: is the bellhousing mounting the same on an m10, m20 and m30? I'd think they were different, but I don't know.....

Just to warn you the electric shift ones are not as long lived as the older tranies.

The M20 uses a different bell housing then the M10. this 4hp was designed for the M10.

Hehe, this car is for a woman that loves 2002s. She also likes an automatic. She also lets me have "my" 2002s and their derivatives. This is how i found the faq a few years ago, looking to see if anyone had done this. She got hers, and I get to keep mine. Next project , 29000 mile M6 drive line and suspension into a euro 635.

Pretty cool....I love fabricators...now we need someone to do a six speed manual conversion and we'll be all set!

Great conversion!

I am a big fan of automatic '02's for daily-driver, stop and go commuting use and this makes them even better.

The 4hp22 is pretty long lived, I think it might still be in production. Around late 86/87 or so, some changes were made to the trans, mostly lubrication etc. Remember hearing that you shouldn't rev a 4-speed auto bmw in neutral? like at a red light, shifting into neutral and revving would kill the tranny. Has something to do with inadequate lubrication. That was fixed. my E28 has 396000 kms on its 4hp22 and shifts ok :)

The later tran's that have the electric compnents are off the e36s, e34s etc ie the later BMWS. The automatics (electric) were a joint ventrure with GM as it was though they know more about atuomatics. Those later cars if reved, like during emmisions testing, will blow up. They never thought anyone in there right mind would rev an automatic in park or nutral...... Most inspection places who know about the problem refuse to inspect them, thats illegal but they claim the machiene is broken. I have not heard of a problem with the old mechanical 4hp22s in the e30s, e28s etc.
