I took the yellow CSL to my "off-site" garage and brought the orange touring home. They looked beautiful parked together on the Streets of San Francisco (alas, not Michael Douglas or Karl Malden sightings) while trading parking spaces.

The CSL looks so much more sexy and has a much more nicely appointed interior (even on the striped down "L"). But, I must admit the touring is more fun to drive! Doesn't have the same beastly sound the CSL has, but it carves up the road and loves to zip around!

The touring came home for the (hopefully) final leg of the long awaited "new motor project." I have a bunch of work left:

>prep body for injection (return fuel line, tii booster to fit injection, figure out fuel pump)

>take out old motor

>clean up and paint engine compartment

>install new motor and C/R five speed

>install A4 system

>get it running.

My goal: 2006 Palo Alto swap and show.

Pictures, we need pictures! Someone swing over to Josh's place, and snap some pics for him. I would LOVE to see a Golf CSL beside an Inka 02!

The touring is a homemade Alpina A4. Right now it has Bilstein green dot struts with big brakes, H&R springs and Alpina inverted rear shocks. It rides on Alpina steel wheels and some decent but not great 205/60/13 tires. I will be installing the Alpina adjustable anti-sway bars and drive train (including 2.2 liter S14 cranked, Alpina A4 injected motor).

And, most importantly, the 2002 factory turbo seats that Al Cannuk retrimmed:

Thank you! I NEVER saw those seats fully assembled. I saw the bottoms, and the backrests, but I had stepped out for a few hours the day the boys put them together. When I got back, they were taken apart, and wrapped up. They were a huge project with all the foam work, and they sure turned out nice.

Hi Schnell,

Looking good. Word of warning about fuel pick-up (that you may alread know). If you're using a standard Touring tank drilled to take a Tii fuel pick-up you'll suffer fuel starvation under cornering with just under a quarter of a tank left.

I've been suffering from this since my M2 was built and had guessed they'd used a standard Tii fuel pick-up in a Touring tank and it simply wasn't long enough. We'll I've just received a Tii Touring tank from Cahsel as mine was also leaking from below the waistline and on taking everything apart I've discovered I had the right fuel pick-up, but the standard tank doesn't have a bowl/baffle in the bottom that keeps a pot of fuel available under cornering.

Anyway, HTH.

Nick

Fuel delivery -- as you undoubtedly know -- is a not-so-insignificant issue when modiying the touring. I have to plumb the lines and figure out what to do abotu the high pressure line. I plan on using an e30 fuel sender/pump/return. But, it will have to be modified to work on the deeper touring tank.

And, I haven't read the post about body stiffness (or lack of) but I plan to put a rear strut brace in to stop the anticipated flex back there.

I used a pump from a coupe, probably the same as the one in your CSL. Copper high pressure fuel line runs along the left hand sill. If you need a Tii Touring tank Cahsel.de has them for a very reasonable €80, plus €40 for the Tii fuel pick-up. At least it's all a bolt together solution, rather than having to modify anything, which might be a whole can of worms.

Looks good! I emailed Micahel and we'll see how mich it is shipped here.

Does that battery fit under the truck floor? Any more pics of the installation?
