Has anyone ever used a non BMW heater box?

Just curious to see if anyone has had any success using an aftermarket or non factory heater box/core. I have several 02 boxes in various states of disrepair sitting in my garage which have not responded well to my attempts at making one good one from a few bad ones. Given the availability and cost of working factory units, I'm considering using a something cheaper and more plentiful. Does anyone know of any heater cores that will transplant into a 2002? Has anyone tried this?

I have considered trying to install a jap car evaporator case to allow for a more efficient a/c system.

not in an o2 but did, many moons ago, put one in one of my other cars....i got it from jc whitney, it was relatively easy to install, out of sight and still works well

it's been a long time since i've look'd seriously at a whitney catalog but would bet they still list them..if not, i guess the web's full of other sources
