i removed the shock absorber type mounts on my 74 and replaced them with

simple metal mounts pulling the bumper closer to the body

A really good look is to convert the big bumpers to the earlier chrome bumpers from a round tail light car in the style of a europeon car

With shrunken bumpers with a slight bump you are much more likely to get severe frame damage. It may look better but the bumper shocks are there for a reason. Your better off doing the euro conversion or leaving it as is..

If more power is better then way too much is just enough.

You just cut a section from your accordian to make it the proper length. As I understand these are NLA, so you need a spare set to experiment with, or be truly in love with the look!

it's just my opinion but it's unlikely you'd sustain anymore or less damage with a shorten'd "big bumper" than with the original, lightweight early bumpers

the amount of damage is gonna be determined by the severity of the accident, not the style or fit of the bumper

The design of the shock is to compress. If you take out that compression the force is going to be direct to the frame rails of the car. At least with a eurobump set up there brackets meant to do it. Not drilled out shocks(which is kind of lame in my humble opinion).

Plus big bumpers are really ugly whether polished or painted so just ditch them...
