i was wondering if there's any difference other than the numbering between the Bosch mechanical advance distributors with the p/n's that end in 002 and those that end in 008?

if so, what is the significance of the difference?

any reason why one would be chosen over the other?

The advance curves are not the same. This can be seen if you took both distributors and put them on a Sun or similar distributor machine to map the advance curves. It seems that when Bosch runs out of a specific model of distributor they supercede it with whatever is closest in terms of advance curves, that is sitting in their parts warehouse.

As a follow up question.

If one has a tii, then using a replacement distributor is “less than ideal”. Is the advance curve “less than” the original curve?

Sure, the weak link on the vacuum advance (it's vacuum retard, technically) distributors is that the mechanism is subject to wear and becomes sloppy over time, making it difficult to dial in the proper timing. I believe that any 2002 can benefit from a mechanical advance distributor, as long as you can dial in the proper timing (requires trial and error, it's part of the fun). More advance = good, up to a point. I'm not sure, though, how a mechanical advance distributor would fare if you live in a state where your car is subject to emissions testing?

I have a possible lead on brand new copies of the bosch 008. I would have to buy a bunch of them. Think they'd sell?

I didn't realize they were still making them, what are they going for? I see used ones for $100 to $150 all the time, I don't know how many are buying them though.

New ones are over $400. Rebuilt are pushing $200 with no guarantee. Usual problem is springs are no good. Ordered a set from 2002AD and never got them - guess they would rather put them in new dizzys as opposed to selling them so we could rebuild ours. Springs were listed at $1.80 each. Took four used distributors to be able to get mine working again and the springs I used were from a six cylinder so the advance curve is probably off. But at least it runs. If you have a source for good used ones, I'd be interested assuming the springs have been replaced with new.

No I don't have a source for used ones, I just see them on e-bay and such. My potential source is for brand new copies made in taiwan. I talked to a guy that gets 009's (original for VW) from this company and he says the quality is as good if not a little better than the original bosch. I was hoping I could retail them for ~$150. $200 or more is just too much to pay in my opinion. I'll also talk to the company about an electronic variant of the 008 and reverse rotation to fit late E21s without changing the cam. I'll let you guys know what I come up with.
