Getrag 5spd CR or OD ?

Can you tell by looking at a Getrag 5spd (which was on a tii) whether it was a close ratio or an overdrive ? Does anyone know the gearing on these boxes ?

I aint no expert, but AFAIK the last two digits on the serial number of a CR are 77.

I'll wait for the experts to chime in.

Thats for a steering box. He's asking about a tranny.

I believe the shift pattern is different.

The best I can see is the location of the dentente ball bearings on the shifter mechanism ... differnt because of the different shift pattern. Here are two photos that may assist.

Nice pics, Thank you ! There were a few other pointers to telling the difference, but this was not mentioned, I don't think...

Here were a few from BarryA, posted last month:

245's - if I remember correctly there should be three readily identifiable, visible differences between the the OD and CR boxes (anybody with better or more accurate info, please feel free to jump in here.....):

1) the CR boxes are a little shorter overall (bellhousing flange to output flange).

2) the OD box uses a different slave cylinder / t.o. bearing carrier design (the E21 OD t.o. bearing arm is long, surrounds the input shaft and pivots off a stud on the opposite side of the bellhousing from the slave cylinder, while the CR box uses a similar arm to the regular '02 4 speed design.

3) the OD box's reverse light switch is on the top of the case, the CR box's is on the tail housing
