I always take my finger and put a *thin* fim on the head and valve cover's gaket surfaces to fill in any funny spots. Usually do that with most gaskets though.

I use a little Wurth DP300 just at the seam between the head and upper front cover. The good gaskets don't need any more than that. But, if a gorilla has torqued the cover down in the past with a 1/2 inch breaker and warped it, all bets are off!
