I have heard that a good engine gunk removal method is steam cleaning. Are there any retailers out there that sell such devices.. all i can find is for carpeting etc..

This is a joke right? I'm pretty sure they were referring to a high pressure sprayer. There might be a type that sprays hot water and/or steam. I definitely can't use my Hoover SteamVac on anything other than carpets.

are used for engine cleaning by large shops to clean the gunk off.

you might also try a high pressure spray attachment for an air compressor. the attachements are cheap and you can dunk a feeder hose into the solvent of your choice and spray it at high pressure.

No joke, I didn't know that they are refering to a high pressure sprayer. That's kind of what I was trying to find out. I know there are steam cleaners

for carpet and then hard surfaces, but I was trying to figgure out what they use on engines and if you just get one :)

The type of steam cleaners used on engines are large multi-thousand-dollar devices that usually use diesel to heat the water. Not a houshold appliance by any means, but they do work quite well if you can find someone that has one. You have to be careful of your wiring, etc.

thinking of, it's possible to get a LOT of gunk off by using a gas powered pressure washer - if your home hot water heater has a normal hose bib on the tank drain, the high pressure spray can be enhanced by running a reinforced garden hose from the hot water heater's fitting to the water input fitting on the pressure washer, and (as posted previously) picking up water-soluable cleaning solution (Nature's Orange, Simple Green) with the pressure washer's suction fitting.

High pressure + hot water + cleaning solution will do a pretty decent job, but be real careful not to peel off paint or force soapy water into places you don't want it go - 2-3,000 psi will force quite a bit of water through a REALLY small opening......

I get really good results just with a cheap ($70) electric pressure washer, it runs about 1700psi and removes a lot of gunk. Let it dry, on the stubborn bits I get some spray can degreasser ($2 a can) another blast - crud gone. Great for carpets too (out of the car). Beaner7102

Mine has about 54k. I bought it in '03 with only 18k, but its been my daily driver since then, so the miles have been steadily racking up. If you haven't done so before, you should check out that M Coupe video in the off-topic forum.
